Profits for a Better World

Socially responsible young entrepreneurs are creating for-profit businesses to enact social change.

Once upon a time, people would start a business with two main goals: to be their own boss and to make some cold hard cash. But for some young businesspeople, that's just not enough anymore.

"I think many in my generation have lived their entire adult lives with a feeling of helplessness to change the world around them," says David R. Anderson, 25, founder of San Francisco-based Green Options Media, a network of sustainability blogs, and Renewzle, a lead-generation service for clean-energy installers. "The decreasing barriers to starting a business, especially online, have opened up a new world of social change, while at the same time providing an escape from the drudgery of a boring, corporate or otherwise ineffectual job."

There are many reasons for the rise of social entrepreneurship, which The Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship defines as "about applying practical, innovative and sustainable approaches to benefit society in general, with an emphasis on those who are marginalized and poor."

Murdoch Marketing is a full service marketing agency that challenges the status quo to achieve significant results.

As a project manager and account support person I will excel in monitoring and managing project budgets, time-lines and deadlines. I have several years of experience in the marketing and distribution side of several organizations and small business start-ups.

I have developed web-based marketing programs for iheartlove.org that included email blasts targeted at specific customers, driving customers to our sales events through social networking sites such as Facebook and Myspace, and creating online media to promote the company.

While at Hope College I focused on marketing and engaged in the study of public relations and consulted on projects for The Image Group, Hope College Admissions, and others.

I have experience in client/customer relations from many angels and in a variety of situations. Through my work as a customer associate for a publisher and an independent sales associate for a large network marketing company I have had much experience working one-on-one with customers, responding to customer inquires, and reaching out to new customers.

As the founder and owner of a local screen printing company I have constantly been marketing my brand, exploring new customer niches and working with clients and vendors for each order we fulfill. This experience involved all areas of customer relations, marketing, and creative problem solving.
